Curriculum

The Department of Medical Education serves as home for select key faculty teaching gross anatomy, embryology, microscopic anatomy and neuroscience. We teach the following courses:

Anatomy of Voice and Speech Production

Students learn the physics (mechanics) and physiology of systems of respiration, phonation, articulation, and neurology of speech and swallowing.  They conduct gross anatomical studies of the facial surface, mouth, tongue, nasal cavities, throat, pharynx, larynx and pulmonary system.

Course Director: Peter M. Scheifele, MDr, PhD

Dissection of the Human Body

This is an independent study laboratory elective. The student may choose to review any region(s) of Gross Anatomy. Throughout the elective, the student is required to inform the director of progress in the course on a daily basis (usually via e-mail). The director will inspect the students work on a regular basis and approve of progress in the course.

Course Director: DJ Lowrie, PhD

Global and International Medical Education

This elective provides a "single point of entry" for students interested in all global health elective activities except those sponsored by Family Medicine under elective 06-01-38. Students seeking information on global/ international medical education opportunities or to apply for this elective may contact the elective director at any time.

Gross Anatomy – Prosection and Teaching

Students will prepare prosections for the first year Gross Anatomy course. They also will be expected to participate in teaching in the laboratory, including setup of exam questions for the practical exam.

Course Director: DJ Lowrie, PhD.

Human Gross Anatomy

The summer Human Gross Anatomy course is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of human anatomy with an emphasis on cadaveric dissection.   Anatomical regions covered include the back, vertebral canal, and spinal cord; thoracic wall, pleural cavity and mediastinum; abdominal wall and contents; pelvic cavity and perineum; lower and upper extremities; head and neck; gross anatomy of the brain.

Course Director: David Pettigrew, MS, PhD

Neurological Foundations of Communication

Students learn the neuroanatomy and physiology of communication, mastication and deglutition. Emphasis is on neuroanatomical structures directly related to speech production, auditory systems and language, and basic neurophysics. Gross anatomy of the head and neck structures related to speech is included.

Course Director: Peter M. Scheifele, MDr, PhD

Neurological Bases of Communications Disorders

Students learn the neuroanatomy and physiology of speech production, auditory systems and language with the addition of medical imaging, sonography and electrophysiology.  Emphasis is placed on clinical/functional correlates and diagnoses of hearing/speech and swallowing pathologies as they relate to audiology and speech-language pathology. Gross anatomy of head and neck structures related to speech and audition is included.

Course Director: Peter M. Scheifele, MDr, PhD
