Located just east of the university's uptown campus, the Academic Health Center houses some the university’s most innovative and captivating science and research laboratories among four colleges and patient care facilities and resources. With $302.3 million in research dollars (75 percent of UC’s total research funding) in FY12 and 7,072 students (Fall 2012) in the health professions, it is one of the most innovative academic health research complexes in the nation.
The colleges on UC’s medical campus are dynamic centers of education, research and patient care and include some of the oldest schools in their fields. The College of Medicine was founded in 1819 and is the second oldest public medical school in the U.S. The fifth pharmacy school to open in the country was the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy in 1850. The College of Nursing began in 1889 and was one of the first to offer a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The AHC’s youngest college, the College of Allied Health Sciences, was founded in 1998, by consolidating numerous health programs from across the university.
The Academic Health Center is enhanced by a close collaboration with UC Health, the university’s affiliated health system. With five facilities including the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, UC Health also includes the 700-member University of Cincinnati Physicians faculty practice group that sees more than 1 million patient visits annually. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the nation’s third-ranked children’s hospital, is home to the university’s pediatrics department. Faculty and students also work closely with Shriners Hospitals for Children-Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
